What Are Torque Tubes?

Torque tubes are industrial torque reaction systems designed to support nutrunners and absorb torque forces during fastening applications. Commonly used in automotive and manufacturing environments, a torque tube allows operators to apply high torque without transferring reaction forces to the operator. 

Unlike traditional torque arms, torque tubes provide extended travel and flexibility by integrating with overhead crane systems. This makes them ideal for assembly lines where large work areas and multiple fastening positions are required.

For more demanding applications, torque tubes can be rigidly mounted using four crane trolleys. This design allows the system to handle overhung and multi-directional loads without the need for hinge pivots. 

A carriage supports the torque tube and usually runs along 2 bridges, which in turn are supported by 2 runways. 

This configuration creates a highly stable overhead torque tube system capable of supporting heavy-duty nutrunner operations across large assembly areas.

In applications requiring long travel distances, a crane-mounted torque tube is used instead of a traditional torque arm. These systems allow nutrunners to move freely across large work areas while maintaining precise torque control.

A vertical slide floats the nutrunner, suspended from a balancer or an air cylinder. This configuration creates an ergonomic nutrunner support system that improves operator comfort and reduces fatigue during repetitive fastening tasks.

A torque tube can be configured in multiple ways depending on load requirements and crane system design. Most commonly, torque tubes are suspended from two trolleys on a bridge or monorail system. In this configuration, hinge pivots are required to prevent moment loads from transferring to the crane trolleys. 

This type of overhead torque tube system is commonly used in assembly line applications where multiple nutrunners are required for increased productivity.
