Rigid & Lightweight Slide-Column Manipulators
Slide-Column Manipulators combine the long travel of an overhead crane with the precision and rigidity of an industrial manipulator. Designed and engineered by Givens Engineering, these crane-mounted manipulator systems provide controlled, ergonomic lifting for offset loads, heavy assemblies, and high-production manufacturing environments.

What Are Slide-Column Manipulators?
The Slide-Column was developed over many years by Givens designers to offer a rigid column with the mobility of a crane, combining the best features of a manipulator and a crane.
A slide-column manipulator is a rigid lift assist system suspended between two overhead crane bridges, allowing it to travel long distances while maintaining precise load control. Unlike traditional cranes, which allow loads to swing freely, slide-columns keep the end effector upright and stable.
A slide-column is a very lightweight lifting device that can travel as far as a crane can: up to 9m in the direction of the bridges and 40m in the direction of the runways.
This extended travel makes industrial slide-column manipulators ideal for automotive assembly, engine handling, and large component manufacturing.
How Slide-Column Manipulators Work
Slide-columns are always suspended between 2 bridges.
Since offset loads create moment forces, one bridge experiences downward force while the other experiences upward force. For this reason, bridges must be extremely strong yet lightweight.
The Slide-Column consists of 2 vertical rails, one fixed one sliding. The sliding rail travels vertically, held aloft by an air cylinder.
The end effector hangs from the bottom of the slide-column and is free to rotate from a bearing block.
Unlike a crane hoist, the end effector remains rigid and upright, preventing swing and allowing precise positioning of the load.
This rigidity is enormously useful:
- When lifting an offset load
- If the load has to be pivoted, causing the center-of-gravity to shift
- If the load has to be inserted into an opening, in the same way as putting a cake into an oven
- If there are multiple loads, each with a different center of gravity
Traditional manipulators offer rigidity but limited reach. Slide-Column manipulators provide both rigidity and full crane travel, up to 9m bridge travel and 40m runway travel.

Engineered with G-Rail™ Crane Technology
In most cases, we use G-rail™ with the Slant Truss reinforcement (patented) with slide-column manipulators.
Slide-Column manipulators are typically supported by G-Rail™ aluminum crane systems reinforced with our patented Slant Truss. This ultra-lightweight yet rigid configuration ensures the bridges can withstand the moment loads created by offset lifting while maintaining smooth, efficient travel.
Advantages of Slide-Column Manipulators Over Traditional Cranes
One of the great advantages of manipulators over cranes is their ability to make a load float without up/down push buttons.
Slide-Column manipulators provide the same floating load control, allowing operators to guide loads smoothly using handlebars instead of push-button controls.
Without the distraction of up-down push-buttons, an operator’s speed accuracy can be increased.
Since the load does not swing when the crane travels, cycle times improve and placement accuracy increases, especially in high-speed automotive manufacturing.
Real-World Slide-Column Manipulator Applications

Heavy-Duty & Automotive Applications (SC5 battery example)
Our SC5 Slide-Column has a moment capacity of 5,000 in-lb, measured from the center of the bearing block outward a lift capacity of 300 lb, including the weight of the end effector.
The SC5 is an all-aluminum, very lightweight lifting device, developed to withstand repeated applications of offset loads starts stops. It is normally fitted with up-down push-buttons, but can be made to work in “float mode” as well.

Slide-Column Manipulators on KBK & Unified Rail Systems
In this case, the slide-column is suspended between 2 KBK bridges. In this case, the slide-column is suspended between 2 KBK bridges. To prevent articulation or skewing, the bridges are rigidized using specialized end trucks. The end effector integrates automated nutrunners to fasten automotive components with precision. Cable track systems replace traditional festooning to improve durability and cable management.
For heavier applications, custom steel slide-column manipulators can carry assemblies up to 1,000 lbs., including engines, radiators, cradles, rotors, and struts. These systems are suspended from Unified rail and operate using pneumatic hoists, providing controlled vertical motion for large-scale automotive assembly operations.

SC5 Slide-Column for Exhaust System Lifting
In this photo, an SC5 Slide-Column lifts exhaust systems through an unusually large vertical travel of 1.5m. The slide-column travels on a very large G-Rail™ crane. The height-under-bridge is 4m the bridge runway spans are both 9m. Notice the Slant-Trusses on both the bridges the runways. The entire moving assembly is so large that the use of any crane rail type other than G-Rail™ would have rendered the crane too heavy for rapid movement.

All-Steel Slide-Column Manipulators for Axle Assemblies
A custom, all-steel slide-column manipulator moves rear axle assemblies in this photo. The end effector uses 2 G46 grippers 2 sets of handlebars (one on either side of the end effector).
The Slide-Column rides on 2 G-Rail™ bridges, reinforced with the ultra-lightweight Slant Truss.

Slide-Column Manipulators for Heavy Loads
Heavy-duty slide-column manipulators are frequently used in automotive assembly plants to transfer engines, axle assemblies, exhaust systems, and battery modules.
With a normal crane, when motion begins, the hoist chain swings and continues swinging after stopping.
This swinging makes precise placement difficult and slows production.
Our first Slide-Column was made specifically to address a very real problem with a crane carrying engines at a major auto assembler. The swinging of the chain the load made it impossible to keep up with production.
Once the slide-column manipulator was installed, load swing was eliminated, and production efficiency improved significantly. More than a decade later, that system continues to operate reliably in a demanding manufacturing environment.
Improve Precision and Productivity with Slide-Column Manipulators
Slide-Column Manipulators deliver the long travel of a crane with the rigid control of a manipulator, making them ideal for offset load lifting, automotive assembly, and high-speed production lines. By eliminating load swing and improving operator ergonomics, these crane-mounted manipulator systems increase safety, accuracy, and throughput.
