This month, we are excited to share our custom manipulator created for a client that required a grip, rotate, and tilt mechanism to mount flywheel housings to engines on their production line. The machine was required to handle 24 different parts, ensure grip safety and support operator ergonomics. It was one of the most difficult applications we have ever tackled!
Tailored Options
Part Variability
Our system is designed to handle 24 variants of housing that range from 50 to 300 pounds, have a diameter of 18″ to 30″ and a grip surface diameter that is only 0.75″ deep. If you know about end effectors, you’ll know this is almost impossible!
Grip Mechanism
The grip assembly is under 10″ wide in order to fit through the conveyor cutout and install the retaining bolts. Each gripper jaw is able to tilt in order to accommodate a slight misalignment in the grip. While two shot pin cylinders are mounted to the grippers to provide additional hold and adhere to the irregular internal structure of the housing casting.
Part Present Sensing
Quadruple part-present sensors ensure the gripper is engaged before actuation to prevent parts from being dropped.
Operator Ergonomics
The assist extends and retracts to bring the operator closer to the engine during alignment, while a remote handle provides more precise control when working near the marrying point.
Mobility
The unit is attached to a slide column and crane system to allow for movement through the work area.
